Chapter 2

Salma from 2075

Omar speaking into the radio with a dreamy image of the future city and Salma above it

Omar edged closer to the radio, his heart thumping like a drum. He didn't know whether the radio could send his voice, but he found a small red button with the word SPEAK underneath it. He pressed it and said in a shaky voice:

"Hello... I'm Omar. I'm in the house with the palm tree. Where are you?"

There was a long silence. Then the voice came through, clearer than before, with a delighted laugh.

"Omar? It worked! It finally worked! I'm Salma. I'm ten, and I live in this house... in the year twenty seventy-five."

Omar opened his mouth, then shut it, then opened it again. "Twenty... seventy... five? That's almost fifty years from now!"

"I know it sounds strange," said Salma. "I found this radio in the attic, just like you. My grandmother says it's a magic radio. It doesn't pick up stations — it picks up days. I've been trying to talk to the past for months."
