Chapter 2

The Rainbow Lesson

Madam Naseem teaching the children to paint rainbows as Rana paints a wobbly one

The cloud flew between the clouds, higher than the birds, higher than the aeroplanes, until the city below looked like a tiny map. All the way there, Rana kept her eyes tightly shut and clung to the edge of the cloud with both hands.

Then she heard a golden bell: ding... dong... ding...

She opened her eyes... and gasped.

Floating in front of her, above a sea of clouds, was a whole school made of clouds! Its towers were round and soft, its windows were made of see-through mist, and a long rainbow bridge stretched from its gate to its playground. Children were arriving from every direction, each on a little cloud of a different shape: a cloud like a whale, a cloud like a dragon, a cloud like an elephant.

At the door stood a tall woman whose silver hair floated about like mist and whose eyes were as blue as a summer sky. It was Madam Naseem.
